The Republic of the Day is the largest and most important of the day. The parade takes place every year on 26 January at Rajpath, New Delhi. It is the main attraction of India's Republic Day celebrations, which last for 3. a memorial to fallen soldiers at India Gate at one end of Rajpath.

When is the Republic Day Parade Held.?

The Republic Day Parade takes place with Rajpath, in Delhi. Its route, which is more than five kilometers long, sets out from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's Palace) and follows Rajpath past India Gate and on the Red Fort.

What Happens at the Parade.?

The Republic Day Parade kicks off with the President of India, escorted by a posse of bodyguards on horses. The Prime Minister of India lays a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay homage to those who lost their lives in war. The President raises the national flag as the National Anthem is played, and a 21-gun salute is given. The Parade is led by the three divisions of the armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) who showcase their strength. This includes a dramatic airshow as the parade grand finale.

Women Power will again feature in this year's parade A female member of India's Border Security Force "Daredevils" motorcycle stunt team will salute guests while riding her bike hands-free. Another woman will lead an army marching contingent of 144 male soldiers

Powerful new artillery weapons will be displayed on the parade for the first time this year.

This includes an M777 American Ultra Light Howitzer and K9 Vajra-T. The M777 Howitzer can be used in flat or hilly terrain that is difficult to access and will be deployed at high altitude borders with China and Pakistan. It weighs 4.5 tons and has a range of 30 kilometers.

  • The K9 Vajra-T features a high-caliber, long-range self-propelled gun system to fire explosives.

Various Indian states are represented in the parade by floats that highlight an aspect of their cultures such as historical events, festivals, architectural heritage, significant social or economic projects, the environment, and visions for the future. A highlight in 2019 will be the Delhi government's float, which will showcase the time spent by Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Smitri before his assassination there in 1948.

Republic Day is celebrated on 26th January every year across India India got its independence on 15th August 1947 and around two and half years later it became a democratic Republic. This day is of great significance for every Indian since the Constitution of India came in force and India was declared as a Republic of the country.

History of the Constitution of India

In a meeting held on 28th August 1947, it was decided that a drafting committee will be appointed for a permanent constitution for India. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was made the Chairman of the Drafting Committee which took the responsibility of submitting the constitution of India to the Assembly on 4th of November, 1947, which was adopted on 26th November, 1949 and came in force on 26th January, 1950.


Republic day is a national holiday in India when people celebrate this great day of honor in their own ways. Everybody is glued to television to watch the Republic Day, while children participated in Republic Day programs in schools. The main celebration takes place at Rajpath, New Delhi where President of India hoists the National Flag and parade is organized by the Indian Armed Forces. People also pay tribute to all the freedom fighters of the Indian independence struggle who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
